VDPAM/SMEC 7480 – Swine Production Medicine
This unique experience offers students valuable insights into the swine industry, allowing them to develop and practice clinical and production management skills, gain hands-on experience in swine veterinary practice, and enhance their communication abilities. By collaborating with AMVC in Audubon, IA, and various industry stakeholders, students receive a comprehensive view of the pork industry and swine medicine.
-
Participants will:
- Review and analyze hands-on practice of clinical swine veterinary techniques, including population observation and data collection strategies.
- Develop basic competencies in animal handling and restraint, ante-mortem and post-mortem diagnostic sample collection, and humane euthanasia.
- Analyze post-mortem samples and learn the process of submitting diagnostic samples to a diagnostic laboratory.
- Complete an electronic medical record detailing the history, evaluation, diagnostic sampling, results, and interpretation of the sites visited.
- Prepare a client communication report summarizing their evaluation and recommendations for the site.
- Learn how to complete a veterinary feed directive (VFD) form, certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) form, and various methodologies to calculate water medications for a population.

There are very few veterinary schools that are able to provide students with the exposure to swine medicine like Iowa State can.
