VDPAM/SMEC 7478C – Swine Emerging Diseases and Emergency Response Management

This course will cover diagnostic tests, methods, approaches, analysis, and evaluation of emerging swine diseases and provide general knowledge of disease elimination and methods to manage herd losses and economic losses due to disease

DSC_4714

Participants will:

  • Correctly identify which animals to target for testing and determine the number of animals needed to sample given a scenario of a potentially diseased swine facility.
  • Select the appropriate diagnostic tests, methods, and approaches for a disease in an infected swine facility.
  • Correctly choose disease elimination techniques and evidence-based methods to manage and minimize losses for an affected herd using case studies.
  • Analyze and evaluate diagnostic reports and elimination/management strategies for disease with raw data from a clinical farm.
  • Describe the principles commonly applied to commercial production to minimize economic losses due to disease at a commercial level given access to a swine agribusiness’s data.

SMEC provided me with classes that were foundational to being able to practice medicine post-graduation. I came out of vet school very confident in my abilities to diagnose disease either through clinical signs or through collecting samples and ordering the correct tests.
