SMEC SMART

SMEC SMART

The Swine Medicine Education Center, Swine Medicine Applied Research Team (SMEC SMART) was designed to assist researchers with anything between the grant award to the end of live animal work.

Examples of ongoing projects include sow mortality improvements, Certified Swine Sampler Collector, best practice with usage of carbon monoxide for depopulation events, solutions to microbial contamination in water lines, and so on. You will only pay for the help you need.

How it Works

Phase 1

Introduce team members, establish objectives, identify/review background information about client, project, and SMEC.

Phase 2

Provide detailed project design and development. Includes literature review, detailed project protocol, project budget, estimated timeline for project execution and analysis

Phase 3

Project Execution and Analysis. Receive progress reports, executive summary, peer reviewed manuscripts, dissemination of results, knowledge incorporated into teaching curriculum

Post-Doctoral Project Examples

SMEC’s post-doctoral research associates are at the forefront of swine research, technology, and opportunities. They benefit from direct access to Iowa State’s  swine faculty, diagnostic lab, and diagnosticians. Through extensive hands-on experiences at Iowa State’s swine farms and production sites across the state, post-docs develop and practice clinical and production management and medicine skills. This practical experience enables them to design and conduct their own swine-focused research studies as part of their graduate degree.
