VDPAM/SMEC 7478A – Swine Production Medicine and Consultation

This course offers participants the chance to develop swine production management and consulting skills within a progressive swine production and management system. The course is divided between in-class discussions on the finance and business aspects of the swine industry and on-farm learning opportunities. Students will visit a breeding farm, growing pig facilities, a mixed animal veterinary clinic, and a truck wash facility.

Participants will:

  • Review a biosecurity scenario at a farrow-to-finish farm, and explain how to correctly move through each phase of production.
  • Assess raw data from a clinical farm, and describe the biological and financial performance, considering pig, medication, and feed costs.
  • List relevant differentials and describe appropriate diagnostic and treatment methods with a routine case.
  • Identify opportunities to improve management quality and genetics during a site visit with a production manager.
  • Explain proposed changes at a level understandable to both veterinarians and clients.
  • Identify business inputs and outputs, describe income generation, and assess how employees influence business success.

SMEC was a great choice for my education because I got to see real world swine health and production while having a structured learning approach to help reinforce the principles we were being taught.
